Focal Cortical Dysplasia Research Program Laboratory

About the Lab

The Focal Cortical Dysplasia (FCD) Research Program was established by Nathan T. Cohen, MD, in 2020 at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC. Building on the legacy of the world-renowned Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program’s skill in pediatric epilepsy surgery, the FCD Research Program seeks to characterize a pathological spectrum that is the most common cause of surgically treatable, drug-resistant epilepsy in children.

  • Mission

To translate clinically-acquired data into meaningful solutions that improve the lived experience of those affected by focal cortical dysplasia.

  • Vision

Utilizing advanced analyses of brain connectivity from different sources, we seek 1) to define and refine the understanding of networks underlying disease and comorbidity expression in focal epilepsy; 2) to integrate multimodal information to develop tools that enhance diagnosis, monitoring and treatment and 3) to establish individualized, network-informed precision medicine.
