About the Lab
Led by National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded investigator, Monika Goyal, M.D., MSCE, the overarching goal of the Addressing Disparities through Advocacy, Prevention and Technology (ADAPT) research lab is to address inequities in both the provision of care and health outcomes through Emergency Department-based interventions for youth.
Emergency Department (ED) care is available to all people at all times, regardless of insurance status, race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, and acts as a safety net and critical source of health care for children with limited access to primary care. Given this unique role, our team aims to develop interventions to further improve the health of our community, with a focus on health disparities and social determinants of health, sexual health, and firearm injury prevention.
Highlights from the lab

Disparities in appendicitis
Racial disparities persist in pediatric pain management. Our team previously found that, in comparison to white children, children of color are less likely to receive appropriate pain medications, such as opioids, for appendicitis and long bone fractures.

Disparities in SARS-CoV-2 among children
Our team was the first in the U.S. to report racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in SARS-CoV-2 infection rates among children.
