Steven Hardy, PhD, is a pediatric psychologist and director of Behavioral Health Services in the Divisions of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood and Marrow Transplantation at Children's National Hospital. He is also a tenured associate professor of pediatrics and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Hardy earned his PhD in clinical health psychology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, completed a pre-doctoral internship in pediatric behavioral medicine at the Jackson Health System/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric psychology at Children's National. Dr. Hardy's research has been funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Cancer Institute, as well as nonprofit organizations including the Doris Duke Foundation. His work aims to: (1) improve early detection of sickle cell disease-related changes in neurocognitive functioning; (2) develop and test interventions to ameliorate pediatric cancer- and sickle cell disease-related neurocognitive difficulties; (3) determine psychosocial risk and resilience factors in the context of transformative therapies such as hematopoietic stem cell transplant and gene therapy and (4) enhance understanding of the interactions between neurocognitive functioning, pain and quality of life.
