  • Brandon Kappy, MD, MPP, is an assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine with a research focus in data analytics, clinical operations, and disaster management. Dr. Kappy developed an interest in healthcare administration and operations while completing a master’s degree in public policy, examining how insurance plan design influences population health outcomes. As a part of the Pediatric Pandemic Network, he created a novel pediatric Hazard Vulnerability Analysis that incorporated pediatric-specific operational weaknesses to better help regional emergency managers prepare for disasters. Since beginning fellowship in 2021, Dr. Kappy has embarked on a research career centered on identifying and analyzing the operational processes that impact patients in the pediatric emergency department (ED) and during hospitalization. By evaluating the ED as a dynamic system and creating novel data points to represent how patients and staff interact with that system, Dr. Kappy’s research adds new insights to the basis of care delays that affect clinical outcomes. Some of his current research projects include:

    • Large database analyses, specifically related to ED and hospital patient flow, historical trends and resource utilization.
    • Simulation modeling of pediatric EDs to evaluate patient care delays and trial interventions.
    • Machine learning prediction models of left without being seen and other operational outcomes.
