Neonatal Neurocritical Care Research Program
The Neonatal Neurocritical Care (NNCC) Research Program focuses on clinical research aimed to advance neuroprotective care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Our goal is to optimize neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm and high-risk term newborns through improving neurodiagnostics and neurotherapeutic interventions. Research spans:
- Preclinical work to develop novel therapeutics in animal models of developmental brain injury
- Clinical investigations to establish blood-based, physiological and imaging biomarkers of neonatal brain injury
- Technology development led by Tammy Tsuchida, MD, PhD, to advance neuromonitoring capabilities in the intensive care unit environment
- Therapeutic trials led by Taeun Chang, MD, to evaluate neuroprotective therapies such as erythropoietin in newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.
Other important areas of research focus include the role of the placenta in the development of perinatal brain injury and understanding the risk factors, treatment and outcomes of neonatal seizures.
